Kurt Thomas, an American gymnastics star, died of illness on June 5 at the age of 64. The pioneer known for floor exercise and pommel horse movement suffered a severe stroke on May 24 due to a torn basilar artery in the brain stem.
Kurt Thomas was born in Miami on March 29, 1956. He won the gold medal in men’s floor exercise in the 1978 World Gymnastics Championships and became the first world champion of American men’s gymnastics! In the 1979 World Championships he won 2 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze, and graduated from Indiana State University the same year.
Thomas was very promising to win the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In preparation for the game, he trained up to 50 hours a week. Thomas retired with regret, and later opened a gymnastics school with his wife.
